i am the interior designer on another episode of Home Made Simple on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) that aired this past Saturday at 9am/8c - hopefully you dvr'd and if not, catch re-runs of Home Made Simple on OWN!
i designed a living/dining room combo for the lovely Janeen Braham, her 3 children and Janeen's mother Frankie. since Janeen's divorce, three years ago, she had not decorated the giant room - that is the first room you see when you walk in the house! the room held sad memories for her because her husband stored all of his stuff in there when he was moving out. so i infused a happy elegance into the design with bright yellow paint and all of Janeen's favorite colors (plum, yellow, garnet and grey).
the entire design was accomplished for very little moola - i got the dining table and 8 chairs for $150 at a thrift store! ...we took the paper shades off the windows, spray painted the chandelier crystals and hand-dyed some old leather chairs! lots of DIYs and projects to get inspired by. you can check out HomeMadeSimple.com for all the project details and see below for more photos!
here are the BEFORE and AFTER photos of Janeen's living and dining room...
i chose a happy yellow paint color because i knew i wanted to pair yellow with plum and garnet - the effect is elegant but cheerful and not too "stuffy" looking so Janeen's kids can feel they can enjoy the room too! check out HomeMadeSimple.com for more details.
the dining table and 8 chairs was $150 from a thrift store! i chose to paint the table a pretty puddy grey color and the chairs a different color for some whimsey. the plum spray paint on the chairs really highlights the intricate design. we used simple and durable canvas fabric to re-upholster the chair cushions and i love the whole look! check out the step by step guide on HomeMadeSimple.com
this beautiful mantle was a piece of raw wood that Thad re-finished and mounted on the stone wall, above the fireplace. i chose to keep a natural wood look because the stones were so natural and textured and i knew it would be a nice juxtaposition to the tailored elegance in the rest of the room. learn more on HomeMadeSimple.com
often when you have a small budget, you need to re-purpose things you already have! in this case, Janeen had these two leather chairs that were still in great shape, except one had a big marker stain on the cushion. i took this as a cue and we DIY-dyed the leather! we used leather dye to just dye the cushion for a hip and updated look to an old chair. learn how to dye a chair on HomeMadeSimple.com
my favorite part of the room! this old chandelier was once a drab gold color with clear crystals (see BEFORE pics above) and needed to be updated! i chose to think outside the box and instead of just spraying the chandelier - we did the crystals too! i chose an ivory satin spray paint for the chandelier and a wine color for the crystals to make them look like garnets! hellooooo elegant and chic! see the step by steps on HomeMadeSimple.com
me and happy homeowner Janeen! i'm so glad she loves the room and i hope she and her lovely family can now infuse it with tons of wonderful memories!
