In the spirit of bloomin' Spring, I decided to do a DIY Daisy Hat! What better way to #upcycle an old straw hat than to give it a little fresh paint and a cute daisy? I feel like I want to travel back to 1920's Florida to wear this hat on the beach hanging with Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe...Some Like It Hot anyone? Anyways, I've had this straw boater hat for over a year and I got it at H&M for cheap - you probably recognize it from OOTD posts like this one - so for this Spring I thought it was time to spruce it up, spray it white and put a daisy on top!...plus, I'm short so most people are looking down at the top of my head.
Prep It:
- Straw hat
- Masking tape or painter's tape
- X-acto knife
- Black permanent marker
- White spray paint or color of your choice
DO IT!:
- If your straw hat has a ribbon or any detail like mine does, cover that with masking tape.
- Place strips of masking tape on a scrap piece of cardboard or a crafter's cutting board - don't press down too hard because you have to peel them off later.
- Draw out petals and a round center - I made mine purposefully organic and imperfect, no petal is the same!
- Use your blade to cut along the lines and peel off your petals and center dot.
- Place the tape flower center dot on the center of the top of your hat and arrange the tape petals around the center dot - make sure the tape is pressed down securely.
- Spray your hat with your spray paint outside using a drop cloth or protective ground cover.
- Let dry, remove tape and ta da, you got flowers on the brain!
