yesterday was May 1st aka May Day ...shit, i gotta pay my rent. we went to the May Faire at my old school Highland Hall. i went to pre-school/kindergarden all the way through 12th grade there! 15 years total! it's a Waldorf school, which i always inform people about with a capsule description that goes something like this: "it's a philosophy of education created by Rudolf Steiner. it's a very nurturing and gentle way of teaching children all the skills that you would learn in any school but through much more creative and artistic ways. we don't have homework until around junior high, we don't get grades until high school (and only then in order to get accredited by colleges), we don't have text books we make our own by writing essays and drawing corresponding pictures in blank books on whatever topic we're learning, we do wood carving and stone carving and painting and weird dance and gardening, we are discouraged from watching any TV (i didn't watch TV until high school) and we say a morning verse to greet the world every morning. it's all about cultivating a child's individuality and letting them interpret the knowledge and skills in their own unique ways." i'm really grateful i had a Waldorf education... as Joey put it, "you basically went to summer camp for 15 years."
Highland Hall has annual Advent Faires and May Faires. both are kind of Pagan leaning, with May Pole dancing and head wreath booths. Ali (how cute is she in her May Day outfit and fishtail braid!) and i made head wreaths and signed up for face painting... but the wait was too long and we were clogging up the list for the 4 year olds so we relinquished our appointment and bought temporary tattoos instead.
my mom Annie, is in town, back from her 3 month trip around the world. we all went to the May Faire, joey bought plants for the garden, then we went to Pure Luck for a vegan dinner and Scoops for vegan ice cream after... so good! the Pure Luck sign had some letters missing and just said "uck," we got fried pickles and the BBQ jackfruit "carnitas" sandwich and tacos, highly recommend. they adopted a chicken named Betty from a laying facility and had her pic and info on the wall, love! at Scoops we had chocolate almond and pistachio non-dairy ice cream... all in all a really tasty happy magical May Day.
outfitz: sonia rykiel for H&M platforms, flea market top, Alythea shorts, street-bought sunnies, all Mr. Kate (new) jewelry, and handmade head wreath. Ali wore a vintage floral dress that she cut into a skirt, smart!
