OMG We Bought A House! Episode 9: Bottoms Up!

Posted by MrKate on

In this episode we start to nail down the design of our dining room. We started with a crystal chandelier from Lamps Plus as the centerpiece of the room which will be over our dining table (when it arrives). The gorgeous tray ceiling in this room is one of our favorite architectural elements in the house, so to help it stand out, we decided to wallpaper the inset ceiling. You can see it especially well from the lower level living room (down two steps) so I wanted a wallpaper that would be complimentary to the adjacent living room as well. The wallpaper we decided on is Lunaris II from Calico Wallpaper and we are SO excited to see it once it's installed... aren't you?

The birdcage planter is perfect in the corner by the window. It brings a nice green moment to the space and is a great use for that nifty vintage birdcage we got at the flea market. We knew we wanted to make a bar out of the little (oddly placed) built in cabinet in our dining room but it needed some sprucing first. I decided to make the back of it gold to reflect the light from the window opposite and give a nice glow to some of our favorite liquors which we put into decanters. Decanters are an easy way to add a bit of class to any bar. Our furniture we ordered online hasn't arrived yet but we have a stand in that's the perrrfect size for me, but maybe not Joey ; )

Prep It:

Do It!:

  • Tape off the edges of the area you are going to paint.
  • Paint on the gold leaf.
  • Let dry and repeat with another coat if needed. It's stinky stuff so open a window for ventilation!
