We're so excited to bring you the Halloween Special OMG We Bought A House! We've been at a stalemate with the renovation process (waiting on permits and plans, and engineering, blah blah - as seen in my nightmare at the beginning of the video) so that's why we haven't been bringing you any new videos on our house as of late. BUT BOOs, we still gotta decorate for Halloween!
That's what today's video is all about... decorating our lawn and finding some costumes in our closet! And the scariest part? We got locked out of our house while shooting! UGHGHGHGH but Joey saved the day! Hope you laugh and enjoy. xo!
DIY CAT BUSH
PREP IT- 2 Black sheets of foam core
- 1 thin sheet of yellow foam paper
- Thick and medium thick wire - you will need super thick wire for the wiskers and thinner wire to attach the ears and eyes to your bush. Look in the floral section of the craft store.
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Cutting knife/blade
- Paper for stencils (optional)
- Glue
- Ruler
- Black and white markers
- Draw out the eyes of the cat in your desired size depending on the size of your bush. I decided to do one eye closed and one open, but feel free to change it up! Cut out your eyes using the craft knife. - Optional, create a stencil by drawing your shapes on a paper bag in case you want to layer the yellow foam paper over the black like I did to add a highlight.
- Cut out your eye shapes from the foam core and from the yellow foam paper. Don't forget a pupil for the cat eye!
- Glue the foam paper over the foam core and then the pupil on top. Let dry.
- Measure 2 equal triangles and draw it out on the black foam core and cut them with your craft knife - these will be the ears.
- Make small holes in all your foam core elements and attach pieces of the medium sized wire. On the ears, make the holes on the bottom of the triangle and on the eyes make the holes on each side. This is how you attach the ears and eyes to the bush so make sure the pieces are long enough to wrap around the branches of your plant.
- Cut long pieces of your thick wire, about 6 feet each and fold in half. The folded area is what you will use to shove into your bush and each end will stick out to be the whiskers. You can wrinkle and curl the wire for more frisky looking whiskers!
- Attach the ears to the top on the bush and place the eyes where it looks the best. Use the little pieces of wire to attach it to the bush by wrapping around a branch or twig inside the leaves of the bush.
- Push the big flexible pieces of wire into the bush to form your whiskers and style to your liking.
FLOATING LACE GHOSTS
PREP IT:- 8 Inch Styrofoam balls
- 6-8 yards of lace fabric
- Fishing wire
- Screw hooks
- Glue
- Screw a screw hook into the top of a styrofoam ball. You can add glue to make it stick better. Let dry.
- Place the lace over the styrofoam ball and measure your length. Make it shorter on one side so it looks like it has more movement.
- Cut your lace and push the hook end through the fabric - since it's lace it's easy to pass the hook through a space in the lace pattern.
- Cut a 2 inch wide strip of lace and wrap it around the "neck" of the ghost gathered the lace and securing the styrofoam ball.
- Attach fishing wire with a basic double knot to two or three corners of your ghost lace as well as to the screw hook on the top of the head.
- Hang the ghosts to a tree with the fishing line and use the additional fishing line attached to the corners to make the ghost look like it's in mid flight with "arms" outstretched.
DIY Zombie Makeup
Prep It: (all makeup supplies were bought at the Halloween store unless otherwise noted)
- Bald caps
- Liquid latex in flesh color
- Liquid latex in a Zombie kit that has black and white latex colors
- Fake blood
- Fake teeth
- Fake scar patches
- Scar putty - usually comes with a small spatula applicator
- Adhesive (I didn't have any so I used eyelash glue but adhesive from the costume shop is stronger and better)
- Makeup sponges (from drugstore)
- Red lipstick
- Various dark eyeshadow colors
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Latex skin prep and remover kit (really helps to get this stuff off later!)
- Costumes: old clothes you can tear and get dirty!
- Use the latex prep lotion on your face and neck - this helps protect your skin and hair when you're removing the latex later.
- Put on the bald cap and use the pencil to trace around your ears. Remove the cap and cut out the ear shape. Optional: cut little slices in the cap in random spots to pull through locks of hair to look extra dead.
- Put on the bald cap and use adhesive to secure it down around your forehead and temples - we didn't have the adhesive so I just used a ton of latex painted on with the foam brushes that come in the kit. I have a lot of hair which I balled up and stuffed in the back of the cap. It definitely does not look perfect but hey, I'm a zombie! Use the pencil to pull out locks of hair through the slices in the bald cap.
- This is the part where you get to get creative with your zombie - You can add scars using the scar putty, paint more latex all over using the darker shades to create sunken cheeks and eye sockets and use the scar patches attached with adhesive (conceal the edges of the scar patches using more liquid latex so it looks seamless).
- Use dark shadow around your eyes and red lipstick to make them look red rimmed.
- Use some fake blood pods to drip under your nostrils, at the corners of your mouth and dripping from your tear ducts.
- Insert the fake teeth - which usually come with wax to help them stay secure.
- Slice up your clothes and rub some dirt on them and you're ready to go!
