DIYWhyNot: Oversized Turtleneck Sweater

MrKate_DIWhyNot_Turtleneck_Sweater-11

I recently saw a roundup on Elle.com of Fall 2014 trends which included oversized turtlenecks by the likes of Helmut Lang and Thakoon, among others - see it here. I immediately thought they looked cozy, chic and totally DIYable using two sweaters! This DIY is a great way to update some old sweaters in your closet for this Fall and Winter and it's easy! The only rule you have to remember is that the sweater you're going to use to make the oversized turtleneck part must be 100% wool. Watch the video above for the full tutorial and #mrkate to show me your turtle moment!

DO IT!:

  1. Machine wash and dry the wool sweater you are going to use as your turtleneck to felt the fibers together an prevent unwraveling.
  2. Cut a tube from the body of your sweater, under the arm holes or below depending on how oversized you want your turtleneck.
  3. Insert your turtleneck tube about an inch down inside the collar of your second sweater. TIP: Safety pins can help keep your turtleneck in place while you sew the two together.
  4. Thread your yarn needle with a piece of matching yarn and stitch the turtleneck to the collar of your second sweater with a loop stitch. TIP: Double up the yarn and tie a knot at the end to start the stitch and give you a stronger hold.
  5. Proceed with your loop stitch all the way around the circumference of your collar and knot the thread a couple times to end. TIP: If your turtleneck tube is wider than the collar of your second sweater, make little pucker pleats every few inches to make it fit perfectly.
