Rocking Fall Trends, 3 Ways, Your Way!

Posted by MrKate on

For us humans, the year begins in the January, in the middle of winter. For fashion, however, the year really begins in fall, when trends for the next calendar year start emerging and the streets are filled with endless inspiration for your next #OOTD Insta.

For this video, I took on three of this coming fall's most promising trends: floral dresses, dusty pink & yellow, and turtlenecks, and styled them in a way that worked for me! After all, a trend is only as good as how it makes you feel! It's important to find the way these looks and ideas can incorporate into your style, and hopefully this fall fashion tutorial can help!

Click play above, and check out the details (and some key shoppable pieces) for each of the looks below!

Look 1: Floral Dress for Fall

When I opened up the floor to you lovely viewers/ followers / fellow creative weirdos to tell me what you wanted to know how to style, a ton of submissions were about dresses! Well it turns out that one of fall's upcoming looks is a cold weather take on a summertime staple: the floral dress. This works out, since almost everyone has at least one of these hanging around, and now you can rock it throughout all the seasons!

To bring this floral dress into fall territory, I topped it with a bomber-esque jacket and added black tights and boots to make it much more appropriate for the chillier weather. Tip!: You absolutely can wear tights underneath maxi dresses! Especially ones like this that have movement or slits. When you're walking and people get that peek of your black on black tights and boots, they'll be so envious that you look cool, yet are probably really warm!

Look 2: Dusty Pink and Yellow

Here's a color combination I bet you never thought you'd see past Easter: dusty pink and yellow! Yet, each of these colors is having a real moment on the fall runways (and on some certain office buildings!), and have been paired together in ways that look much less springtime and much more street style. I mean, there's no expiration date on colors, so #whynot?!

The key to wearing these colors without looking feminine and fairylike is to consider the structure and style of the pieces you're choosing. Not the first time you've heard me say it and not the last — it's all about juxtaposition! Wear a soft pink and bright yellow in an outfit comprised of masculine-inspired, athleisure pieces. You'll look fresh as a daisy without looking like a literal one.

Look 3: Making a Jeans Outfit Complete

MRKATE_FALLSTYLE_3Ways_Blog-8478

Another one of the major questions I got when it came to fall fashion was how to create an outfit around jeans! For a style staple, jeans can sometimes be tricky to get around. They are such classics, how do you take the outfit to the next level and not just leave the house looking normal cute? My secret? Some math!

MRKATE_FALLSTYLE_3Ways_Blog-8439MRKATE_FALLSTYLE_3Ways_Blog-8446

Okay, maybe more counting than math. When styling jeans, I like to adhere to a rule of 3s. Don't just wear a top and some jeans — always add a third element for interest. It could be a flannel tied around your waist, a statement necklace, or a nice pop of color with your accessories. I demonstrated all of those options with this look, breaking my own rule of 3s and proving that sometimes, if you're feeling bold and have the right pieces, a rule of 5s is even better!
