Bouquet Of The Month: Red, White, and Blooms

With Independence Day on the horizon, there are so many saturated shades of red and blue adorning every corner of the nation, the continent of North America probably looks like a giant Firecracker popsicle from outer space. In the midst of these brighter-than-berry reds and unbelievably vibrant blues, it's easy to forget that these colors can be beautiful in a way that is subtle and natural.

For my 4th of July celebration, I wanted these colors exactly as the came from the earth. Hydrangeas are one of the few naturally blue flowers, and the deep red of these carnations wiped away any loud memories of synthetic cherry and neon scarlet. Best of all, packaged in a paper bag, this bohemian bouquet makes the perfect gift to bring to any host or hostess who might be throwing an Independence Day bash.

Do It!:

  1. Remove the handles from the paper bag and prop open. Roll the lip of the bag over once or twice to hide the crisp edges.
  2. Pour sand in the bottom of the bag to fill it out and give it weight as a base. Place two mason jars into the sand.
  3. Starting with the eucalyptus and fern branches, create the bouquets in the mason jars. When you're ready to place your hydrangea, wrap the ends of a few branches together with twine or floral tape to give the cluster that big, bushy appearance.
  4. Keep filling your bouquet out with pieces of greens, carnations, and hydrangea until you have the perfect balance of red, blue and green that fills out the paper bag.
  5. You're finished! Use the bouquet as a picnic centerpiece, hostess gift, or just lovely DIY home decor for your summer celebrations!
