Adult Finger Painting DIY: Slice of Neon

MrKate_DIY_FingerPaint_Reveal (6 of 6)

More in our series of adult fingerpainting because.... #whynot!? As you know, I'm a big fan of using your own artwork to decorate a space. I'm also a big fan of making that artwork in the messiest way possible.

When it came time to decorate the brand new style set in the Mr. Kate Studios (which you can see in action here!), we knew it wouldn't be complete without some of that fun abstract art.

For this piece, we challenged ourselves to marry two opposite notions: finger painting and geometric art. What resulted was an awesome representation of the creative contradictions that Mr. Kate is all about, and that looked pretty dang impressive framed on the wall. Check out the steps to make a piece of art like this below!

Do It!:

  1. Squeeze three small dollops of black paint onto the bottom of your paper. Spray water over the paint drops and paper, then use your fingers to create an abstract shape/ design/ art explosion.
  2. Spray more water onto the bottom of this design and wipe back and forth across the paper creating a striped effect. To give your stripes more impact, play with the texture and thickness by wiping some stripes with a paper towel or adding more paint throughout ... or both!
  3. Let this part of the painting dry. When your masterpiece is ready for its next layer, break out the painter's tape and tear down the middle to get uneven edges. Place the tape throughout your paper where you want your pink paint to be, creating a geometric, yet abstract tape stencil.
  4. Dollop the pink paint onto your paper and spread it throughout your stencil design using your fingertips and/ or the silicone paintbrush.
  5. Let this pink paint dry, peel off the painter's tape, and voila! Frame your artwork in a matted gallery frame and hang on a wall for instant "Oh did I do that?" chic!
