DIY easy pin curls

Get a vintage look with modern tools! I wore this hair-do on my birthday and a bunch of you commented with your requests for a tutorial…and here it is! I call these "lazy" pin curls because pin curls are traditionally created by using hot rollers but instead, I cheat by using a wand curler! I also chose to keep my bobby pins visible and criss-crossed for an almost industrial juxtaposition to the delicate curl, you could disguise your pins more, if you want. Watch the video above for the full tutorial and catch a glimpse of Joey and I living out our Mad Men dreams - the fact that R ratings didn't exist in that era was lost on Joey's improvisation.

Prep It:
  • curling iron - mine is a wand (clip-less) 3/4" iron
  • dry shampoo - optional
  • hairspray
  • brush
  • comb
  • bobby pins

DO IT!:
  1. part your hair on the side using your comb and brush out the tangles
  2. optional: spray dry shampoo and tease hair at the crown of your head to give it some lift and volume
  3. take about a 2" wide lock of hair by your face and curl it with the curling iron
  4. starting at the bottom of the lock of hair, follow the natural wave of the curl to create the circle shape of the pin curl as you work your way up to your scalp
  5. use a bobby pin or two to hold the circle curl in place and finish with a spritz of hair spray
  6. repeat step 3, 4 and 5 on other locks of hair, framing your face or around your entire head!
  7. I chose to do 3 on one side and 2 on the other and then used the same curl technique to add soft waves to the rest of my hair. The key is using the iron to create curls all in the same direction and then brushing out the curls for a smooth finish.

Good luck with your lazy pin curls!
