i came up with the aluminum foil stamping idea because i wanted to use something that everyone has in their house. you can interpret this on-trend floral pattern on anything! try it on any textile, shirt, jacket, shorts, paints, skirt, etc. or use regular acrylic paint (like i did in this Painting Purses DIY video) and create a floral print on a pair of shoes, a belt or a purse! make it more "fall" by using oranges, yellows and reds for your flowers.
Mr. Kate's DIY Floral Print with Aluminum Foil
Prep It:
- aluminum foil
- fabric paint - get at arts or crafts store
- white shirt (i got ours at the thrift store) or any article of clothing you want to print
- paper plate (for your paint palette)
- iron
- fabric markers in black or dark color for center of flowers - or you could use a black fabric paint and small paintbrush
- a piece of paper
- decide where you want to stamp your micro floral print and put dollops of your paint colors on your paper plate.
- rip little pieces of aluminum foil and crumple them to create your different flower stamps - *you want a different foil piece for each paint color. **make sure there is negative space (inverted folds) in your foil stamps which will create the petals of your flowers.
- test your different stamps on a piece of paper to make sure you like the shape and to plan your layout.
- start stamping on your shirt! dip one of your foil stamps into one of your paint colors and stamp away, dipping again in the paint every few flowers for even paint coverage. **don't go over the same flower more than once, it will look messy.
- once your area is filled with your different colored floral stamps, use your black or brown marker or a small paint brush and some brown paint, to create the inside dots or circle for the center of each flower. just decide where the center is and be consistent on each color to create a cohesive 'printed' look.
- let dry and heat set your fabric paint with a warm iron.
