OMG We Bought A House: Renovation Gets Real

Posted by MrKate on

There ain't no rest for the renovating!

Even though the stress of living in dusty, plastic sheet-laden rooms is starting to get to us (and a nasty cold has definitely gotten to Joey), there is work to be done to finish up this kitchen and bathroom renovation! Can't find time to snooze when there are shower nipples to order, grout to apply, and sink installations to prep for ... and of course bets to win! Back to the Future trivia expertise isn't a necessary quality to be a DIY home renovator, but as you'll see, it certainly comes in handy!

Check out the episode above and see all the behind-the-scenes pics below!

We installed 6 inch hexagon tiles throughout the kitchen and breakfast nook and now we're adding grey sanded grout.

Our cats are getting a bathroom renovation too! We're creating a cabinet specifically for their litter and Joey is cutting a hole for the cat door which will be their new grand entrance to the transformed poo poo palace.

These French Encaustic black and white 'Fez' cement tiles will be used for the walls of our new master bathroom shower stall. Because they are a bit porous, they need to be sealed first with an impregnating sealer. You can do it with a spray bottle or a paint brush, a little goes a long way! We're doing two coats to make sure they're nice and sealed before installation.

Rather than replacing our cabinets with new cabinets (which wasn't budget friendly for us) we saved money by ordering just new cabinet fronts aka doors. We did this by measuring each cabinet and ordering them online off CabinetNow, we got the cheapest option and will paint them white when they arrive.

Thanks to Kohler, we have new faucets and cabinet pulls. I went with a matte black finish for the sink faucets, soap dispenser, dishwasher air gap and mineral water spigot to bring in some of the black accents throughout the house and gold for the cabinet pulls!

The old door in the master bathroom that led to the guest room is now closed and in it's place we have a wall to fit our double vanity as well as space for two medicine cabinets. The shower stall also has wall niches for our shampoo etc.

We went with a 2 inch white hexagon mosaic tile for the bathroom floors which will go seamlessly into the shower stall, no lip!

The new window we bought from a salvage yard and it works perfectly with the adjacent french doors that were already on our guest room and master bedroom.

The kitties have been so good during the renovation!
