As far as I'm concerned, tassels are DIY gold. As long as you know how to tie a tie or fasten a ponytail, it's only a step further to a tassel, and the only a few steps further to an incredibly sweet and stylish sweater, some tricked out gold loafers, or anything else you could imagine putting a tassel on (keychains and zippers come to mind for me!)
This DIY is a great way to update an old sweater or sweatshirt. You can personalize your project by using different colors of yarn or mix and matching. So many options!
The photos for this sweater DIY in particular presented a fun opportunity for me as I was the one behind the camera for a change. Sofia's retro flared jeans, platform boots and 60's hair (inspired by my tutorial!) were the perfect outfit for the completed piece, so she played model for the day and I got to capture her cuteness behind the camera!
Prep It:
Sweater Fluffy yarn Thread (as close to the color of the sweater as possible!) Needle Scissors
Do It!:
- Cut the yarn into a couple dozen pieces about 10-12 inches long. Divide up into groups of three, and make into tassels by folding in half and fashioning into a slipknot.
- Locate the center point on your sweater where you'd like the tassels to hang. We fashioned these into a wide V below the bust, which makes the final sweater still flattering, even though you're adding bulk to something that's already loose-fitting.
- Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. Pull the thread up through the center point in your sweater, where you want the middle (and lowest) tassel to hang. Carefully loop the thread through the knot of the tassel and back down into the sweater, repeating until you've securely sewn it on.
- Repeat this process for the rest of the tassels! Whether you do one side at a time, or work from the middle out, make sure to line up the tassels in the V so it is as symmetrical as possible.
- For a final touch, trim the ends of the tassels so they're even and emphasize the V shape (shorter tails for the outside tassels, longer tails for the center ones.) Then, pair with some flared jeans, a quilted skirt and tights, or whatever you decide for an a-DIY-orable look.
